Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) is a core equipment for underground pipeline and cable laying, playing a key role in modern engineering construction with its trenchless technology advantages. I. Three Core Working Principles of HDD

The operation process of HDD can be summarized as three closely linked stages: drilling, guiding, and pulling back.

1. Drilling Stage

The equipment starts from the ground, driving the drill pipe and bit into the ground through the power system, initially cut into the stratum at an oblique angle. The bit is equipped with replaceable drilling tools, adapting to different geological conditions like clay, sand, or even rock. During drilling, cleaning fluid (mud) is injected simultaneously to cool the bit, lubricate the borehole, and carry cuttings out, ensuring drilling efficiency and equipment protection.

2. Guidance Control

Relying on high-precision positioning systems (such as GPS and IMU inertial measurement units), the bit's position and attitude are monitored in real time, with data fed back to the operation platform. Operators adjust the bit angle based on the preset trajectory, achieving millimeter-level precise control of the underground path through the deflectable guidance function of the controllable bit, avoiding deviation from the designed route.

3. Pipeline Pull-back

After completing the pilot hole drilling, the pipeline or cable to be laid is connected to the back of the bit. The rig pulls the pipeline smoothly into the ground along the formed borehole through rotational pulling, controlling tension and speed to ensure damage-free laying, finally completing installation at the exit point.

In densely populated urban areas, HDD can complete the laying of water supply pipes, drainage networks, gas pipelines, and power/communication cables without damaging roads, buildings, or traffic. 2. Oil & Gas Energy Transmission Projects

As core equipment for long-distance pipeline laying, HDD tackles complex terrains like rivers, lakes, mountains, or highways. For no-excavation zones like ecological reserves or historical heritage areas, HDD's non-intrusive construction stands out. For instance, laying cables under heritage sites, the equipment avoids underground cultural layers for protective construction; in soft strata like swamps, controlled drilling prevents surface subsidence risks.
